If you want to use magic from physical objects in Essentia form, you must create a wand first. The Iron Capped Wooden Wand is the first type of wand you will get. After that, you put a bookshelf then right-click it using the wand. By doing so, you will obtain the Thaumonomicon that tells you all necessary things about Thaumcraft.
